How to Write a Short Story

What is a Short Story?

"Being short does not mean being slight. A short story should be long in depth and should give us an experience of meaning.... A story is good when you continue to see more and more in it, and when it continues to escape you."
~ Flannery O'Connor

Edgar Allan Poe said the story's distinguishing factors were that it possesses aesthetic unity and can be read in one sitting. Yet, as the writer William Saroyan once pointed out, some people can sit longer than others. It finds unity in plot, effect, theme, character, and style. The short story is a relatively brief fictional narrative in prose with a beginning, middle, and end.
